The Creative Comeback

- 09/17/2007
Youth Without Youth, starring Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction), is a film which is set to explore the notion of re-obtaining youth, something which all Coppola fans can see relates very much to Francis himself, as his creative output in his later years has been very minimal. This could end up being quite the comeback, or (although I personally doubt it), could be a let down. My point is that this has happened many times throughout the history of pop-culture.

The End of the Back Issue Comic Book? - 07/17/2007
Over the past few years the growing popularity of Graphic Novels, both original ones, and collections of both old and new material has grown by leaps and bounds. It is in this form that many people will be introduced to the comic book format. They are more accessible because they are in major books stores and are in a more convenient format (full story-arch instead of installments). I personally enjoy reading Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns and other favorites whenever I please, but will these collections replace back issues themselves?

Spider-Man 3 - The Amazing Let-Down   - 06/10/2007
So I saw Spider-Man 3 and as excited and hyped up as I was for it, I was very disappointed. I am not usually one of those fans who pick apart every detail of an otherwise good movie, but there were some serious storytelling errors that stopped the film from being as...

Spidey-Excitement - Spider-Man 3? - 05/01/2007
So... this Friday Spider-Man 3 will come out and it will make a huge amount of money and be praised by many with the exception of a small but opinionated group of fans who disagree with certain plot points or costumes etc. Almost every fan of the movie or comic can play out the entire movie in their minds without much difficulty. We know what characters to expect, we know James Franco finally dons his father’s costume, so why all the hype?
...

Death for Dickens? - 04/06/2007
I recently read Robert Adams essay The Relationship between Writer and Reader, and because intrigued by his thoughts on film replacing novels within our society, I decided to write an essay which conveyed my thoughts on the subject. Comic books play an important part in my view of the current status of entertainment and literature in our society, so here’s my essay; don’t be afraid to respond…

An Oscar for Comics - 03/11/2007
With many award shows recently, from the Grammy’s to the Oscars, one would think that there would be a ceremony of this kind for comic books. Yes, I am completely aware of the Eisner’s and other such prestigious awards, but have YOU ever seen the Eisner’s? Do those who are not part of the select few to have seen them in person even know what they are like? I sincerely ...

Comic Book Lessons - 02/01/2007
I was challenged to do my final presentation in my Writer’s Craft class on comic books. My teacher just so happened to be an enthusiast, and I knew his expectations were high, but that’s not what worried me. I knew I was to have a great group of open-minded, intelligent people who hadn’t had much if any experience reading comics, so I decided to give them all I could and educate them on my favourite medium ...

Holiday Report on Comic Books! - 12/20/2006
I’ve returned from my trip to Boston Massachusetts and had a wonderful time. I managed to visit Newbury Comics in the heart of Boston and enjoyed it very much. It is a really unique store, and what pleased me the most was that it was loaded with ...

Holiday Comics! - 12/10/2006
... With Christmas less than a month away, I began to think about comics and other comic book related items as gifts. Do most comic fans ask and receive something to do with comics as gifts? If not, why not? Is it not our responsibility and preference to, when asked, suggest some comics related items as possible gifts? If you do already, then what are you asking for?

Comics: What The..? 11/21/2006
One of the largest barriers that make comics less accessible than other mediums is that they are too confusing. When I first got into comic books I got turned off…why are there three Spider-Man titles? Are they all Peter Parker? Why do the writers change all the time? Why do the stories conflict with some of the movies and/or cartoons that have aired in the past? Everything about mainstream comics seems like a ...

Comic Book Culture: Around the World - 11/06/2006
Nothing can truly explain the sense of wonder and amazement one feels when they are in a different country, far from their own, and they learn of that countries’ comic book culture. It is very special to actually be there in person, and to let it become part of the experience of ...

Who is Frank Miller to You? - 10/27/2006
To me, Miller represents so much of what I love about creativity in general, and of course, specifically about comics. If it was not for Miller, there is a good chance I would not be where I am today. Yeah, Miller is kinda before my time, but it was his work I was introduced to before most modern creators. The first Wolverine Miniseries by Miller and Chris Claremont was the first full comic story I ever read, and it started my crazy obsession with the character, the medium and of course, with Miller.

Comics In History - 10/11/2006
When I think of comics, the first thing that comes to mind is all the artists, writers, characters and publishers. I think of Batman, X-Men, Frank Miller, Marvel, DC, Brian Michael Bendis, Stan Lee, and ... I think of Will Eisner creating much of the language of comics in his seminal work “The Spirit.” What I tend to forget is that ...
